Chances are, after reading through all of the information online about cloud-based software, it seems too good to be true. That’s because it is too good to be true. Today, we want to offer you some opinions on the other side of the argument, explaining some of the downsides of using cloud-based software in your practice.
Why Cloud-Based EHR Software is Bad for Your Practice
1. You'll become victim to technology.
Ignore those who say technology is a good thing. You might have read that having a cloud-based system is great because you can access your software from multiple types of devices, but who wants to do that. You should be keeping things simple in your practice and moving away from technology. Keep your software access restricted to just one device. Or, you can take your efficiency one step further, and just ditch software all together and opt for traditional paper methods!
2. You'll spend less time worrying about secuity.
Don’t be fooled by this statement. It may sound good at first glance, especially when you read it along with the statistic that 94% of managers say their business security has improved after adopting cloud applications. But, worrying less about security is actually a bad thing. Think about it for a second, if you are using a HIPAA compliant, secure cloud-based software, all the time that you spend in your day concerned about your practice’s security suddenly becomes free. What are you supposed to do with all the stress free time in your day? Spend time offering higher quality care to your patients?
3. You'll be forced to say goodbye to your in-house servers.
One of the “benefits” of cloud-based software is that you don’t have to keep physical servers in your practice, but that isn’t a benefit at all. You’ve come to know and love those dusty old servers that take up valuable space in your practice, why would you want to get rid of them? You’ll just be left with an empty space in both your practice, and your heart.
4. You won't get to shop around for expensive hardware.
This is another horror of cloud-based software masking itself as a benefit. Making the switch to the cloud means kicking annual contracts and expensive hardware purchases to the curb, but that’s not all that great. Why else are you earning money from your practice if you aren’t going to spend it as quickly as possible on new hardware?
5. You'll have access to your system at home, and on the go.
While this sounds good at first, it is really more of a burden than anything else. Why would you want to view things like your schedule from home or during your lunch break? Honestly, we think that just makes your life too simple. You spent years in school learning complex information about this industry, so access to your EHR software should be complex as well.
6. You won't get to manually update your software.
Why would you want to miss out on the excitement of a lengthy updating process? When you have to set aside time for manual updates in your software, your practice gets to make a big ordeal out of it, often having to completely turn off and restart your software. All of that fun is missed out on when your cloud-based software is updating automatically for you.
